Find and replace text in a PDF
To find and replace text in a PDF with FontiaPDF, open it, press “Search” (or Ctrl+F), type the word and its replacement, and choose “Replace all”: every match is rewritten in the document’s font. It is the quick way to update a company name, a date or a price that appears on many pages.
The search covers the whole document, not just the page on screen, and shows you how many matches there are before anything changes.
How to replace text in a PDF in 3 steps

Open the search panel
With the PDF loaded, press “Search” in the top bar or Ctrl+F. The first time, the editor reads every page, which takes a few seconds on long documents.

Review the matches
Step through them with the arrows, or with Enter and Shift+Enter. Turn on “Aa” to match case, or “Whole word” so that “art” doesn’t find “start”.

Replace and download
“Replace” changes only the current match and “Replace all” changes every one of them; a single Ctrl+Z undoes the whole replacement. Then download the PDF.
What’s preserved and what isn’t
Preserved
- The font, size and color of each match, following the same rules as regular editing.
- Accented letters count as letters, so “Whole word” won’t split “café” in two.
- Everything that doesn’t match stays untouched.
Limits
- Search works within each line: a phrase split across two lines of the PDF doesn’t show up as a single match.
- It looks for literal text, with no wildcards or regular expressions.
- It can’t find text inside images or in scanned PDFs, because there is no OCR.
- If the replacement is longer, the line grows to the right; the paragraph doesn’t reflow.

Frequently asked questions
Can I replace text on every page at once?
Yes. “Replace all” changes every match in the document, on any page, and a single Ctrl+Z undoes it.
Is the search case-sensitive?
Only if you turn on “Aa”. Without it, “invoice” also finds “Invoice” and “INVOICE”.
Does it work on scanned PDFs?
No. A scan is an image and FontiaPDF has no OCR, so there is no text to search.
Is find and replace free?
Yes, there is no lock on it: it is part of the free plan, with 20 exports a day, no sign-up and no watermark.
